2019 Webster Trophy Competition Finalists Selected

Now that the regional phase of the 2019 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition has been completed, the Webster team is concentrating on preparing for the National finals – just over a week away!  This year, Webster Week will run from Monday 19 August to Saturday 24 August.  The 2019 National Finals will be held in partnership with Moncton Flight College, Dieppe, New Brunswick.

As we are every year, the Webster team is deeply grateful to our main sponsor AIR CANADA and to the long list of other aviation organizations that lend their support to make Webster possible.  In particular, we wish identify:

Nav Canada (and in particular, Jim Fortier) for developing and administering an on-line exam on air traffic and aerodrome operating procedures. The creation of this examination has allowed the Webster team to expand its selection criteria for regional winners, thereby enhancing the regional portion of the Webster Trophy Competition. Nav Canada also offers an award to the Webster applicant achieving the highest score on the on-line examination. That award will be presented at the Webster Awards Banquet on the evening of 24 August 2019.

COPA (and in particular, Philippe Lemay) for supporting Webster by taking on the hosting role for our official website.  Further information about the Webster Trophy Competition is available on the Webster website at www.webstertrophy.ca

Many of Canada's airlines, including AIR CANADA, are Webster supporters and have hired many Webster finalists over the years. All finalists are guaranteed a job interview at AIR CANADA and also at a number of other airlines once they meet the airlines’ hiring qualifications. While getting an interview does not guarantee a job, it certainly does offer a tremendous opportunity for our Webster competitors.

Hamilton Watches in partnership with La Mine d’Or will be hosting a cocktail event for the Webster finalists and the Webster team during the competition week.  Hamilton Watches generously donates Hamilton watches to the Webster Competition winner and runner-up. Special thanks go out to Thomas Sandrin and Aladdin Hasmani from Hamilton watches for their support.  As well, the Webster Team would like to thank Frank Maillet and Carl Spicer from La Mine d’Or for hosting the cocktail event.

A number of additional supporters provide awards and presentations to our national finalists during the annual Webster Trophy Awards Banquet.  We will recognise the contributions of those supports during the Awards Banquet.  We sincerely thank all of the many Webster team members, supporters, and alumni for their unending interest, enthusiasm, help and encouragement.  Without such a team working together, there is no way we could have kept this Canadian aviation tradition alive since 1932!

Since 1932, many Webster finalists have gone on to become strong contributors to Canada’s aviation industry.  Webster participants have the opportunity to make excellent contacts within Canada’s aviation community, often turning those contacts into additional mentoring, guidance and employment.  Some Webster participants have gone on to be employed by airlines, some are fly in the business aviation sector, others have become very successful flight instructors while many have become involved in aerial work, air taxi and commuter operations, while some are involved in other segments of Canadian aviation. Many Webster alumni remain active in General Aviation activities.  The Webster Team is very proud of the part that the Webster programme has played in the development this impressive group of Canadian aviation professionals.
