Glitch In The System? If you have been receiving multiple copies of the Webster Update recently, I must apologize. I have become aware through receiving a number of copies myself that this may be occurring. We use a system titled Webster Trophy – Builder which is basically quite slick and allows the update to go out individually instead of by mass mailing, thus alleviating the junk mail or bulk mail issues. There is a regimented series of steps that must be carried out prior to release, one of which is to send it as a "test" first, however I think somehow it is getting out to you through that phase and thus multiple copies perhaps arriving. I have brought the issue to the attention of our excellent web master Ragi Sekaly, and hopefully the problem is solved. We will know through this update if it is fixed or not.

Webster Week Preparations (Sept. 19 – 24): There are a large number of prizes and grants along with specific Webster week events that require confirmation and messages and requests have been sent within the last week or so requesting confirmation of continued support regarding each. Invitations have also been sent out by both regular mail or e-mail to our supporters representatives where regular mailing information was not available. Hopefully there will be a good response, as there always is and once again we can celebrate another group of very skilful and sharp young pilots. Accommodations are available at a very good "Webster Rate" at the Toronto Airport Crowne Plaza hotel. Details are included in the invitations.

Where Are They Now? A couple of years ago I wrote an article for the aviation trades focusing on where our past finalists and if know competitors might be in their professional aviation careers. Even though the Webster is advertised as a competition for "The Top Amateur Pilot in Canada", it is pretty evident that 95% of those who become finalists are striving to move forward into commercial aviation. In fact in reviewing the finalists from the past nine years only two showed up as not interested in advancing into the professional aviation field. One of those won the Webster, became totally enamoured with aviation, continued his training and is now flying with Air Canada!

A second article is just being completed now and when a poll went out to our alumni the response was excellent, but more so it is the impressive pilot positions most of them hold from airline Captains & F/Os to flying sophisticated aircraft for private and government organizations. Not only did we poll our current 89 alumni but we reviewed the past winners page on our website which shows all the Webster winners and runner-ups who have been hired by Air Canada and are featured in bold type. The new article is being issued to all the major aviation trade publications in Canada and they continually support the programme generously by giving us space either in the publication itself or on their respective web-sites.This particular article along with the extensive list is quite lenghty, so I expect that it will likely be featured on the websites only.

Was Webster responsible for all these pilots advancing as they have? That claim cannot be made, however many of our finalists and even competitors have indicated how much of an influence the competition was on their subsequent choices as they moved forward and the boost it gave them through important links and contacts as they did so. We, the Webster Team are very proud of all of them, wherever they are.

I have included the article below for your interest.

Have a great day.

Webster Success Story – The Finalists, Where Are They Now?

In a previous article sometime in the distant past, an summary was published on all of the Webster finalists that could be located who had moved outward and upward into the world of professional aviation. Since then that list has changed quite significantly, not only in the additional numbers of more recent pilots flying commercially, but also the advancement in the careers of the others from the previous article. A few years ago a Webster Trophy Competition alumni was formed simple in concept, that if we could locate a finalist's e-mail address, they got added to the list. Currently there are 89 alumni, most from the past decade as we had their information on file. Others however notified us from further back and the list continues to grow.

As a supplement to the alumni list we also kept track of all those winners and runner-ups who had been hired by our sponsor Air Canada. They are listed in bold print on the Past Winners page on our website.

The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is focused on determining the Top Amateur Pilot in Canada and is open to any pilot who has not earned compensation as a professional pilot and of any age and experience level. The greatest majority of those the competition attracts however are the freshly licenced Private and Commercial pilots desiring to enter the field of commercial aviation in Canada. They recognize the recognition, rewards and contacts available to them as finalists in this very prestigious and very national event.

It would be presumptuous to claim that those listed below got to where they are today just because they were finalists in this competition. They got there because of high dedication and hard work but it has been mentioned by many that the competition inspired them to do better and the contacts made were extremely important in their initial entry into a difficult industry to get started in. The Webster team is extremely proud of all our finalists over the years.

Look and see where these finalists are today.
