webstertrophy.ca Newsletter #008 - 2015

Good Day Everyone.

Webster 2015 Competition Concluded:  My opening statement must be that this was one of the best competitions we have experienced thus far!! Other than two short duration periods, one for winds and one for a deterioration of visibility of approximately an hour or so each, the competition progressed from start to finish flawlessly.  Hotel accommodations courtesy of the River Rock Resort, Richmond, BC were exceptional as was the buffet held in their Fraser Room. The staff of both the resort and the catering group including the AV company in charge of the sound and video systems really were outstanding and thus worthy of note.  For the first time in a number of years dealing with hotels. Amy was able to actually rest easy during Webster Week with total confidence.

The Awards Banquet was attended by 80 people and it was definitely rewarding to the team to see the number of representatives who took the time, effort and expense to fly in to Vancouver to attend the event, some of whom came in that day and flew out the next.  Thank you all for doing that as it confirms to us the importance of this competition and your support of general aviation overall.

A Special Accolade:  Webster each year has had the very good fortune to be hosted by some of the finest Flight Training Units (FTUs) in the country, all of whom are on our website. Each year we praise the qualities and contributions of each as we should for they generously contribute their time and staff to ensuring that we have a great competition at their respective sites.  This year however we extend to Pat Kennedy and the entire staff of the Pacific Flying Club (PFC) a special bouquet of praise for their total involvement and efforts beginning well into last year right up and through Webster Week. If the word phenomenal seems like a word of utmost praise than so be it for it fits PFC and especially Pat Kennedy perfectly. In league with hosting Webster this year PFC also celebrated their 50th anniversary and as part of that celebration we were asked to hold the competition at their facility located at the Boundary Bay airport,  Delta, BC.  Keep us in mind for your 75th Pat.

So, Who Won?  The entire Webster team is pleased to announce that the 2015 Webster Memorial Trophy winner is Zhaoyang David Shi, Atlantic Region and flying out of the Moncton Flight College, Moncton N.B.  The 2015 Webster runner-up is Jack Bradshaw, Central Ontario Region and flying with the Brampton Flight Centre (BFC), Brampton, Ont.  The winner this year of the Nav Canada Trophy for achieving the highest mark on the Nav Canada exam is Gabriel Kim, Eastern Ontario Region and training with Seneca College, Peterborough, Ont.

2016 Hosts:  The 2016 Webster competition will be hosted by the Brampton Flight Centre and for a very special reason.  Amy and I have been the stewards of Webster for a total of ten years and we feel it is time to step down and pass the torch to a new person.  The new National Administrator will be Brenda Reid, formerly of Rockcliffe Flying Club and she is currently on as a member of the team.  Amy and I may be stepping down but not necessarily too far away. I may assume the position of full judge or flight examiner and Amy will be there to assist Brenda as and if needed.  BFC  in previous years insisted that they host our last official year.  What they have in mind we have no idea but it could be a good party.
