webstertrophy.ca Newsletter #008 - 2016

One Week To Go: This will be a rather short update as we have now reached the "point of no return" or a better descriptive would be the "critical point" in the approach to Webster Week.
Amy and I along with Brenda Reid who is about to take over as the new National Administrator, Arlo Speer and Kevin Psutka, Webster judges will be arriving at the hotel next Sunday. On Monday all the finalists arrive along with the other judges Brian Shury , Conrad Hatcher and new Webster photographer Ben Rotem. Monday evening is usually a very informal gathering over a social dinner to get to know each other and let each finalist scope out their competition.

Tuesday is the official launch of the competition with a briefing at 0900 at Brampton Flight Centre (BFC) followed by the fam flights for the finalists so that everyone starts on a level playing field – or airport as the case may be.There is a lunch put on by BFC after which the finalists take their written exam at 1400. Tuesday evening is free time but there is a movement to have everyone go and see the movie Sully.

Wednesday, Thursday and with favourable weather conditions, Friday morning are scheduled to complete the airborne flight testsas well as the simulator tests (fortunately not affected by weather).
Wednesday evening is scheduled for a tour of Jazz and Thursday evening all finalists fly heavy aircraft sims at Air Canada.

Unfortunately due to a conflict of course dates the annual fire-fighting course sponsored by Aero-Formatech cannot take place this year, which is always a great hit with the finalists.

On Friday evening there is a reception being put on by BFC for Amy and I as we step down (but not too far away) as stewards of the competition after ten years at the throttle.

Saturday evening of course is the culmination of the whole year with the very exciting and prestigious Awards Banquet where many of you have attended over the years in support of the programme.

We Thank You: As of approximately 2200 on Saturday evening, September 24th, Amy and I will relinquish the stewardship of the Webster Trophy Competition to the new National Administrator Brenda Reid. She is already heavily involved and will do a phenomenal job moving it upward and onward. It has been ten years of riding a roller coaster with most of it going up and neither Amy nor I would have missed a moment of it.

All our finalists we feel have become our kids (all 90 of them) and we continue to monitor their aviation progress wherever and whenever we can. But mostly we must thank you, each and every one who have supported this programme so generously and consistently all these years. We have said it many times before but it bears repeating that this programme would not and could not exist to the level it has achieved without your involvement, so thank you once again.

It is time for new ideas and new enthusiasm. We have not lost our enthusiasm but we have lost a lot of our energy. In my case especially it is probably an age thing. (I would never say that about Amy.)

Wayne
