webstertrophy.ca Newsletter #001 - 2014

Good Day Everyone.

Webster 2013 Another Successful Event:  The 2013 competition has now concluded with the national portion taking place in Winnipeg, Manitoba hosted at Harv's Air, St Andrews Airport.  Harv's Air staff were exceptional in their extended hospitality to all of the Webster participants.  Their facilities are perfect for the training environment, located at a beautiful airport along with beautifully maintained and pristine school aircraft.  Everyone enjoyed every minute of it.

The weather remained stable and clear throughout the entire week resulting in no delays to the programmes. We had a tremendous group of finalists who almost immediately upon arrival began to form lasting friendships.

Their expertise, actions and enthusiasm throughout Webster Week were a credit to themselves, Air Canada, Webster and their respective flight training units (FTU).  During the week they all received a formal fire-fighting course with Aeroformatech and had certificates issued.  They visited the Winnipeg FIR unit on Tuesday night and NORAD on Wednesday night.  Both were extremely interesting and fascinating tours and we wish to thank both groups for welcoming Webster.  On Friday afternoon the competition was over and all the finalists were transported to Allied Wings in Portage where they flew King Air and Helicopter simulators all evening.  One finalist  Megan Varcharesse, Alberta Region was chosen for an aerobatic flight in their Grob.

There are many people to be thanked for the successful  running of Webster Week but a special commendation must go to Jerry Roehr, COPA Director and Hans Luedtke, who sacrificed their entire week from morning to night to transport the judges and finalists around to the various events and back and forth to Harv's Air.  Rob Carney, CFI of Brampton Flight Centre who came out for the week to support his finalists rented a vehicle and also fully participated in the transportation requirements.  Thank you to all of you.  If we don't have efficient transportation we can easily become stalled and backed-up very quickly.

The Awards Banquet set at the Winnipeg Radisson Hotel was well received by the guests however we did have a change of banquet room assigned to us previously much to our concern.  This resulted in a smaller cocktail area then desired and it was somewhat overcrowded.  Furthermore there were constant elevator problems that surfaced resulting in two being out of service with our event and a wedding and a full hotel of guests waiting at times for quite a period of time. The banquet room however was compensated for by the hotel with additional amenities for the inconveniences which are guests seemed to appreciate.  All that aside it was a grand evening, albeit a long one which is a habit at Webster for as emcee, I do wish to acknowledge those who support the programme and there were many in attendance.

Who won?  They all did of course.  Officially however the 2013 Webster winner is Takashi Hirose, Eastern Ontario finalist who is enrolled at Algonquin College and flying with the Ottawa Flying Club.

The 2013 runner-up is Stuart Loney, Central Ontario finalist and flying out of Brampton Flight Centre.

This year we introduced a Nav Canada exam based on pilot-controller communications, airport operations and airspace. The finalist with the highest marks from the exam who won the very first Nav Canada Trophy was Yurey Wu. It is hoped that we can modify and adapt this exam this year so that all regional applicants must complete it as part of their entry requirements.

So thus it ends but then again so thus it starts again.  We have already received our first application and the host FTU is Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario the week of August 19 –23, 2014.
