webstertrophy.ca Newsletter #2019-01

Good Day Everyone.

Webster 2018 Competition Concluded: My opening statement must be that this year's competition was a great success. Other than a rainy day on Tuesday, the competition progressed from start to finish flawlessly.

There are so many people that must be thanked and hopefully as we do every year a detailed article of acknowledgment will go out to the aviation trades shortly, however the Webster Team of Arlo Speer, Conrad Hatcher, Aaron Speer, Mark Yandle, Simon Garrett, Oonagh Elliott and Mike Doiron, as usual, did a magnificent job of keeping everything running smoothly.

The Awards Banquet was attended by 80 people from all over the aviation community, families and friends and covered by WINGS, Skies and COPA Flight magazines. It was definitely rewarding to the team to see the number of representatives who took the time, effort and expense to drive or fly to Peterborough to attend the event. Thank you all for doing that as it confirms to us the importance of this competition and your support of general aviation overall.

Hotel accommodations courtesy of the Best Western Plus Otonabee Inn, Peterborough, ON were exceptional. A special "thank-you" to Nicole Mieske for making our stay such a pleasant one.

This year's banquet was held in Seneca College's hangar. I would like to thank the Seneca College event team for turning the hangar into a spectacular venue for the awards banquet. The staff of BE Catering served up an excellent dinner for the evening with some creative desserts to finish off the night.

A Special Accolade: Webster each year has had the very good fortune to be hosted by some of the finest Flight Training Units (FTUs) in the country, all of whom are on our website. Each year we praise the qualities and contributions of each as we should for they generously contribute their time and staff to ensuring that we have a great competition at their respective sites. This year, however, we extend to Lynne McMullen and the entire staff of Seneca College a special thank you for their total involvement and efforts beginning well into last year right up and through Webster Week. Seneca went beyond the norm by providing the opportunity for the national finalists to fly two of their simulators ... the KingAir 200 and the CRJ. In league with hosting Webster this year Seneca Aviation College also celebrated its 50th anniversary and as part of that celebration, we were asked to hold the competition at their facility located at 925 Airport Rd #580, Peterborough, ON.

Special thanks go to Bill Welsh at Diamond Flight Centre who supplied us a Katana C-1 from London for one of our finalists.

Redbird Flight Simulations attended to make the Redbird and its programming run smoothly. A special thanks to Josh Harnagel, Harvey Madison, and the rest of the Redbird team for helping create the simulator test scenario and for programming all of the surprises into the Redbird for the finalists' enjoyment.

The Webster team also thanks Gordon Williams, Director of Technical Support for Flying Colours Corp.  Gordon took an evening to host our team and the finalists at Flying Colours' facility in Peterborough, showing us the amazing work the company does designing and creating the interiors and exteriors of corporate aircraft.

Webster 2018 had, as we have every year, 9 winners!
