webstertrophy.ca Newsletter #003
Good day Everyone.

The 2012 Air Transport Association of Canada (ATAC) Convention & Trade Show:  Amy and I have recently returned from a very successful week spent at the ATAC Convention & Trade Show held in Vancouver, BC.  Also present were three other members of the Webster Team, Tim Mell, Arlo Speer & Kevin Psutka, albeit there representing Sennheiser, Transport Canada & COPA, respectively but that did not stop them from encouraging and promoting the Training Units(FTU) who we have not had the opportunity to talk to personally in the past.  While operating our booth shared, with the David Charles Abramson Memorial Trophy awarded annually to the top flight instructor in Canada, we had the opportunity to hand out 16 applications to British Columbia Institute of Technology students who were there to assist ATAC members during the week.  A lot of interest was generated amongst them primarily through the efforts of Amy and her magic of promotion.

We also had the pleasure of meeting a former Webster winner from 1989, Sherri Appelton (formerly Kantymir) who is presently working in the aviation programme at Confederation College, Thunder Bay, Ont.where our 2012 Webster winner came from. We also had the pleasure of meeting a previous Webster finalist Andrew Hastie, currently working for the aviation programme at Selkirk College, Castlegar, BC.

The ATAC Convention is an extremely important annual event for us as it gives us the opportunity to do one-stop-shopping.  We meet potential new supporters, address the FTUs about the progress of the programme, encourage new competitors to enter the competition and show the flag to all the members when we announce the winner and runner-up at the ATAC luncheon along with the presentation of the annual  Sennheiser/Webster Scholarship to the FTU who gave us the greatest number of competitors.  This year was won again by Moncton Flight College and the cheque of $3,000 accepted by Mike Tilley.  The cheque must be applied to the training of up to four of the Webster competitors.  The trade show also gives Amy the chance to accost all the vendors for gifts  (9 required each) which she uses to fill gift bags presented to the finalists upon their arrival at the nationals.

Webster Posters:   There are two series of Webster posters sent out to all of the FTUs and selected supporter organizations every year.  The first series incorporates the picture used for the Hamilton Watches Webster congratulatory ad which by the way is featured in the latest issue of WINGS on the inside back cover.  This poster is produced for us courtesy of WINGS.  It is almost ready and will be printed and distributed shortly.  The second poster goes out in the new year and this the beautiful retro-style rendition produced courtesy Dave O'Malley, Aerographics Creative Services.  This poster is ready in English thus far and proudly attached for your review.

Winnipeg 2013: In the last update we announced the joining of the Manitoba Aviation Council to the growing list of Webster supporters due to the untiring efforts of our Director of Marketing, Tim Mell.  Tim has not been idle as he has been to Winnipeg recently and held meetings with MAC as well as Harv Penner of Harv's Air Service, our 2013 Host located at St. Andrew's, Man. Furthermore through the additional efforts of Tim we are pleased to announce that Allied Wings located at Southport, Man. has now come on board and will be offering sophisticated simulator time to our 2013 Webster finalists on Friday evening, Aug. 23. As you all know over the past few years we have been able to secure advanced simulator flying during Webster Week from Jazz, West Jet & Bombardier.  What will be different and exciting this August is that our finalists will have the opportunity to fly helicopter simulators courtesy of Allied Wings. On behalf of the entire Webster Team I would like to thank William Ryan and Lt. Col. Peter Fedak for their generosity and welcome them to our renowned and highly respected group of Webster supporters.

Webster Power-point Presentation:  The 2013 version of the Webster power-point presentation is now ready and will be sent out shortly electronically to our Webster alumni, all the FTUs across the country and other selected volunteers. It is straightforward to interpret and we ask that those willing to present it do so to Private and Commercial ground school classes and especially to include flight instructors if possible.  A copy is attached for your interest.  A french version is also available but due to computer overload when sending it is not included but can be sent upon request.

Have a great day everyone.

Wayne
