webstertrophy.ca Newsletter #002 - 2016

Another Successful ATAC AGM & Trade Show For Webster: Every year we likely repeat ourselves when it comes to the Air Transport Association of Canada (ATAC) AGM & Trade Show but it bears repeating. There is not any other place where we can meet and re-meet with many of our supporters, contact Flight  Training Unit (FTU) operators, seek out new support and promote the programme publicly to all of the ATAC members.  We would like to thank John McKenna, Debbie Simpson and especially Wayne Gouveia for all their generous support of Webster over the years.

This year we were able expose ATAC participants to our new supporter Breitling Watches, encourage a number of air cadets and students from CGEP to enter the competition, update all the attending FTUs about present and future plans for the programme and request consideration to host upcoming years, for which we have already had two positive responses thus far.  Our current 2015 winner Zhaoyang David Shi was presented to those attending one of the formal breakfasts and also the Sennheiser and Flight Safety International  grants were announced and presented as well at that time.  Moncton Flight College  won both of them.  Amy as she does every year gathered a large number of tokens and gifts from the Trade Show exhibitors, which she uses to set up gift bags for the finalists when they arrive. Some pretty good stuff that she collected.

Webster Week 2016: As indicated in the previous update (001) we had not quite confirmed Webster Week for next year, as there was a conflict of dates with two judges who were unable to make the normal third week in August.  Also due to preparations for an annual event put on by our host. Brampton Flight Centre in early September, it was decided that the 2016 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition will take place the week of  September 20 – 24. It is realized this could cause some conflict with the aviation colleges as they are back in class, however if they secure finalist spots, I am certain something can be worked out.  Webster nowadays has too much going for it for a young aspiring pilot to miss out on.

No Rest For The Wicked?  Once the competition is over in August there are clean up items to complete and a couple of things such as the new decals and posters to prepare for after which things gratefully slow down until after Christmas.

That ain't happening this year.  The new competition date had to be finalized and that depended greatly on the host school and availability of hotel accommodations and banquet facilities which necessitated a couple of trips to Toronto.

Then there was ATAC and also meetings with the team, one of which is scheduled for the end of this month.  There is also the pending finalization of the new on-line Webster - Nav Canada (NavCan) written exam, hopefully completed and running by the end of the year.   Arlo Speer, Webster judge is doing a phenomenal job of guiding this project through from our side, along with Jim Fortier who is developing the whole programme on the NavCan side.  Now that the competition date is set, the new posters are ready with the artwork from WINGS  newly received and Brenda Reid, our new National Administrator as of 2017 will be handling the distribution of those to the FTUs nation-wide.

This is turning out to not be a normal year and that is totally fine as it shows that there is continual progress in expanding and improving the Webster programme.

Thank You Nav Canada And Thank You Air Canada rouge:  Recently Webster took a blow to our financial support in respect of a moderate diminishment of funding due to other commitments by one of our supporters.  It by no means crippled us and we are still financially stable through the generosity of other supporters as well, however the reduction could affect the high status we have achieved over the years in the future and the reserves currently held. We have begun seeking a replenishment from other sources and on behalf of the entire Webster Team I would like to sincerely express our deep appreciation to both Nav Canada and also to Air Canada rouge for stepping up and assisting in reducing the shortfall. We are not back to where we should be quite yet but we are getting there. (Not a typo. The non-capitalization of rouge above is the correct way of spelling the name.)

Supporter Special:  It is evident somewhat from some of the items above that this programme depends heavily on so many supporters out there who offer so many different things to keep us going and some receive a lot of acknowledgement, but some who are so very important to us are often less exposed in the background.  They say it takes a village to raise a child, but here it takes an aviation community to raise up the Webster programme. So let's take a look at who does what and hopefully I haven't missed anyone.
