NAV CANADA TO HIGHLIGHT HOW PILOTS AND CONTROLLERS CAN WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE SAFETY

A meeting took place at the request of NAV CANADA between some of their senior executives and representatives of Webster.  The primary reason for that meeting was to collaborate with pilots to improve effective pilot-air traffic services communication through the Webster competition.

To help communicate best practices and tips, NAV CANADA will be highlighting some key resources in an insert that will be included in the acknowledgement letter for Webster Trophy competitors.

In addition to this, NAV CANADA and Webster are considering other ways to integrate communication best practices information through a learning & testing component in the Webster Trophy competition. We feel this is a natural extension of the Webster Tropohy competition and will support NAV CANADA in identifying the best way to implement this using a phased approach, potentially including a component in the finals this year and expanding it to the regional stages in the future.  More information will follow and participants will be notified of any requirements early on.

Over the past few years NAV CANADA has been a major supporter of the Webster programme and we are proud and honoured to be asked to participate in this project. Furthermore we are looking forward to developing additional ways that may be used to address the issue.

WEBSTER CELEBRATES 80TH YEAR OF TROPHY`S EXISTENCE

2012 marks the 80th year since the design and sculpting of the Webster Trophy by R.Tait McKenzie, in time for the original competition in 1932. The Trophy permanently resides in the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.

The competition itself was periodically cancelled due to financial concerns and events such as WW2, however in 1980, Air Canada, Flight Operations took on the role of sole sponsor and the competition has continued annually ever since.  Recently through agressive promotion and the involvement of a very enthusiastic team, Webster is fast becoming an important national event. Over the past few years the number of competitors have grown from an average of 30-35 to 103 in 2011. The number of participating Flight Schools has grown from 10 - 12 to around 30 and the number of supporters from the aviation community have blossomed from 8 to over 30.

All of these advancements are reason enough to celebrate however the 80th year makes it even more special.  Plans are already in the works to make this year a tremendous worthwhile event and over the course of the next few months, this web site will keep you informed. At the moment we are bringing the competition home to where the Trophy is in Ottawa.  Rockcliffe Flying Club, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011 has been selected as the host school and the Awards Banquet will be held at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum on Saturday, August 18th..

2012 Applications can be downloaded from the application link above and we are encouraging early registrations in order to be eligible for ths year`s Early Bird Draw.  There will be some excellent prizes and they will be listed as they become available.  To qualify for the Early Bird Draw all applications must be in before May 1st.
